Movies vs. Books...

So there's a book and it's adapted into a movie. Most of the time, fans of the book are disappointed in the movie, and fans of the movie are disappointed when they read the book. It's an interesting phenomenon. What is it that makes us so disappointed? Why are screenwriters and directors so bad at recognizing what makes certain books successful? Can all books be adapted into movies that really work?

I'll be looking at some specific examples in this blog. Coming soon: Girl, Interrupted, Atonement, and lots of Stephen King adaptations.

This is an interesting theme. I just finished "The Golden Compass". I saw the movie first this time, then read the book. I saw the differences, of course, but the movie sparked my interest in the book and the series. (To truly make the movie of the book would require a 6 hour movie.)

I really loved both the movie and the book, in the end.

Do you think that is a factor-to turn a 300 page novel into a 90 minute movie, you necessarily need to cut, sometimes dramatically, from the plot?

Ok, not only are you doing a topic I'm fairly obsessed with, you're also going to be doing a lot of Stephen King. It's like you picked my brain, not that you would have been trying to do that. Well I know one place I'm going to be coming a lot :D

I had no idea you were a Stephen King fan. I just checked out your profile, and we like a lot of the same movies too. It's weird, I've been reading you for a while, and these are things that make me want to keep reading even more.
